According to Reuters, Google has recently requested that Congress allow for special safety regulations to help autonomous or “driverless” vehicles to get to the market more quickly. Some of the regulations at issue include those regarding steering wheels and rear-view mirrors. Autonomous vehicles present a number of interesting questions and issues for American law. These vehicles are expected to create conflicts and concerns on a number of fronts, including, as mentioned above, safety regulations, as well as torts and insurance…Read More

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will be issuing new Medicare cards for everyone covered by Medicare benefits. These new cards will no longer include the Medicare recipient’s Social Security Number. This change is intended to protect Medicare recipients from identity theft. Unfortunately, due to the large number of people affected, the DHHS expects the changeover to all new cards to take about four years. In the meantime, if you or a family member receive Medicare, please continue…Read More

Here’s a brief article that does a nice job explaining the basics about Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. While we can’t guarantee the accuracy of the information it includes about other states, it is true that UM/UIM coverage is not required in Ohio. Here in Ohio, you have a “choice” when it comes to whether or not to purchase UM/UIM coverage. However, there’s really no choice to make – if you want to be protected, you should absolutely purchase UM/UIM coverage.…Read More

Distracted driving is a growing problem, with technological improvements and reliance on mobile phones and in-car “infotainment” packages constantly on the rise. Now, ironically, we are starting to see new technology being developed to combat this increasingly serious problem. An example is a new system from tech company Harman, which uses a camera to monitor drivers’ eyes while on the road. If a driver’s pupils dilate, it indicates multitasking or cognitive overload, i.e., too many distractions. The system reacts by…Read More

Here’s a funny story out of Florida, where a woman who attempted to flee the scene after causing a crash was foiled by her own vehicle. A safety feature in her late-model Ford, after sensing the accident, automatically called 911 and reported the crash to the police. She was ultimately arrested. You should NEVER leave the scene of the accident. But now, with vehicle technology improving so quickly, there’s one more reason not to. Click hereRead More

Many of us may assume that New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are dangerous holidays on the roads (and they are). However, the long Thanksgiving weekend, statistically, is actually more dangerous when it comes to serious traffic accidents (Source: Forbes). Heavy traffic, bad weather conditions, and, unfortunately, drunk driving, can create a dangerous mix. As you travel this week, whether it be across the country or down the street, please remember to be careful on the roads and aware…Read More

When you are injured in a car accident, your first priority should be making sure you get the medical attention and treatment you need. However, there is often the additional issue of your property damage – your car and other valuables – that needs to be resolved. Unfortunately, this can often be a frustrating process. Uninsured Motorist coverage, or “UM” coverage, is meant to protect you if you are injured in an accident caused by a driver who does not have insurance. Of course, both Ohio and Pennsylvania law require that all drivers have auto insurance. So, with that being said, is UM coverage really necessary? The answer, simply put, is YES. Traditional auto insurance, or liability coverage, is required in most states. But, unfortunately, not everyone follows the law. An alarmingly high number of…Read More

The American Museum of Tort Law, founded by former Presidential candidate and longtime consumer advocate, Ralph Nader, recently opened in Winsted, Connecticut. The museum aims to present a different view of personal injury lawsuits than the one often held by the general public. The museum demonstrates that personal injury lawsuits are, at their core, a tool for the public good. “You know, people don’t see the benefits of tort law. Their cars are safer. Their foods are safer. They just…Read More
