New Tool to Prevent Distracted Driving

Tue, 01/05/2016 - 08:51 -- admin

Distracted driving is a growing problem, with technological improvements and reliance on mobile phones and in-car "infotainment" packages constantly on the rise. Now, ironically, we are starting to see new technology being developed to combat this increasingly serious problem. An example is a new system from tech company Harman, which uses a camera to monitor drivers' eyes while on the road. If a driver's pupils dilate, it indicates multitasking or cognitive overload, i.e., too many distractions. The system reacts by disabling mobile devices and some features within the vehicle.

Here's a funny story out of Florida, where a woman who attempted to flee the scene after causing a crash was foiled by her own vehicle. A safety feature in her late-model Ford, after sensing the acident, automatically called 911 and reported the crash to the police. She was ultimately arrested.

A Safe and Happy Thanksgiving

Tue, 11/24/2015 - 09:40 -- admin

Many of us may assume that New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are dangerous holidays on the roads (and they are). However, the long Thanksgiving weekend, statistically, is actually more dangerous when it comes to serious traffic accidents (Source: Forbes). Heavy traffic, bad weather conditions, and, unfortunately, drunk driving, can create a dangerous mix. As you travel this week, whether it be across the country or down the street, please remember to be careful on the roads and aware of what's going on around you. American Museum of Tort Law Opens in Connecticut

Mon, 10/05/2015 - 12:34 -- admin

The American Museum of Tort Law, founded by former Presidential candidate and longtime consumer advocate, Ralph Nader, recently opened in Winsted, Connecticut. The museum aims to present a different view of personal injury lawsuits than the one often held by the general public. The museum demonstrates that personal injury lawsuits are, at their core, a tool for the public good. “You know, people don’t see the benefits of tort law. Their cars are safer. Their foods are safer. They just live in an improved world,” museum co-founder Richard Newman told the New Yorker.

Fri, 09/25/2015 - 10:41 -- admin

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage, or UM/UIM coverage, is intended to protect people who are involved in accidents caused by drivers without insurance, or with insurance limits insufficient to cover the injuries they caused. A sub-category of UM/UIM coverage is Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage, or UMPD. Although UMPD is not available in all states, it can be purchased in Ohio, usually at minimal cost. UMPD is intended to cover property damage - your vehicle and, sometimes, other personal property - caused by an uninsured motorist.

An alarming article appeared in yesterday's Chicago Tribune regarding a new patent recently obtained by Allstate. The patent essentially covers new technology, including cameras and sensors, that would allow Allstate to gather and record a huge amount of data about drivers and passengers in the vehicles it insures. The technology will allow Allstate to find out the number and type of passengers in your car, whether you are listening to the radio or on the phone, and even head and eye position within the vehicle.

Many insurance policies in Ohio include something called medical payments coverage, often referred to as "med pay" for short. Med pay is available regardless of fault - it doesn't matter who caused the accident. It is not health insurance, but can be used to pay accident-related bills.
